Exercise Planner

Position Description/ Duties
Norwich University Applied Research Institutes (NUARI) is seeking experienced Exercise Planners/Scenario Authors to support the development and delivery of both cybersecurity and physical-threat focused exercises to test incident response protocol and improve the resiliency of various critical infrastructures (i.e. energy sector, financial markets, healthcare, etc.). We are looking for smart, enthusiastic individuals that can work closely with the current exercise development team as well as our team of model & simulation engineers, software developers, data architects, and other subject matter experts. Duties will include:

  • Assist in the development and execution of exercises ranging from executive-level table-top activities to large-scale distributed functional exercises. Specific responsibilities consist of script development and exercise event planning—to include all aspects of planning, execution, evaluation, and after-action reporting.
  • Work directly with client leadership to plan and conduct of exercise events that stress incident response and cyber resiliency.
  • Support the on-going product improvement of NUARI’s Distributed Environment for Critical Infrastructure Decision-making Exercises (DECIDE®) software platform.
  • Conduct demonstrations highlighting the unique capabilities of the DECIDE® exercise platform and explain NUARI services and approach to exercise development to potential clients and/or business partners.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Must have experience as a professional on a multi-disciplinary team and be familiar with the exercise business model as it relates to the development of exercises from the concept stage through execution, to include post-exercise evaluations and after-action reporting.
  • Must possess the creative ability to assist in the development hypothetical exercise training scenarios and develop the exercise Master Scenario Events List (MSEL).
  • The candidate must be a self-starter and possess strong verbal and written communication skills required to effectively communicate with senior leadership, business partners, and clients.
  • Candidates must be able to chair and brief at planning conferences and be able to culminate exercise findings in clear succinct reporting that will be actionable to client leadership as well as fellow exercise planners.
  • Ability to work independently with superb attention to detail is required.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of practical experience with military exercise planning and/or Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP), or equivalent, to include exercise script development.
  • Strong technical and quantitative aptitude with the ability to understand business models and identify/quantify operational risk.
  • Solid understanding of current and emerging trends in information technology and information security.
  • General understanding of financial services models and/or key drivers of business performance a plus.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Information Security, Emergency Management, Business/Finance or equivalent discipline.
  • Candidate must be willing to travel in support of customer needs and NUARI goals. Estimated travel is up to 10% of the schedule.
